The people who'll look after your pet.

Seven experienced vets with the depth for complex medicine and advanced surgery — and a team behind them who'll know you by name by your second visit.

More than routine care

Experienced in complex medicine and surgery.

Our vets are experienced general practitioners with the skills and equipment to take on complex medicine and advanced surgery. We don't call ourselves specialists, and when a case truly needs one, we'll refer you to the right person.

Complex medical work-ups

The patient with vague signs, abnormal blood results or several problems at once. We work through these cases methodically, using our in-house laboratory, digital X-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy, with access to CT and MRI when a case needs it.

Orthopaedic and spinal surgery

Cruciate ligament repair by TPLO and TTA, correction of slipping kneecaps (patellar luxation), fracture repair and spinal decompression for slipped discs — done here, in our own theatre.

Soft-tissue surgery and anaesthesia

From routine sterilisations to complex procedures — skin flaps and reconstructive surgery, bladder surgery and intestinal surgery. Every patient is monitored under anaesthetic and kept warm, with pain relief before, during and after.

Referrals from other practices are welcome — call 011 867 3631 to discuss a case.

Clinical directors and owners

Dr Ajit Bholla and Dr Cheri-Lee Gazendam lead the hospital together, as partners and as practising vets you'll still see in the consulting room and in theatre.

Dr Ajit Bholla
Clinical Director and co-owner · BVSc

Dr Ajit Bholla

Dr Bholla joined Brackenhurst in 2014 and today leads the hospital as Clinical Director and co-owner. He sets the clinical standards the whole team works to, and holds himself to the same ones, from the first consultation of the day to the last operation.

His clinical focus is surgery, and in particular orthopaedic and spinal surgery: cruciate ligament repair by TPLO and TTA, correction of slipping kneecaps, complex fracture repair and spinal decompression for disc disease. These are procedures that often mean a referral elsewhere. At Brackenhurst they are done in our own theatre, by a vet who knows your pet.

His first question in every case is the same: what is best for this patient? It is the principle he has built the hospital around. He wants a friendly, warm place to bring your pet that also keeps raising the bar for what a general practice can do.

Dr Cheri-Lee Gazendam
Clinical Director and co-owner

Dr Cheri-Lee Gazendam

Dr Gazendam returned to her Joburg South roots in 2022 to lead the hospital alongside Dr Bholla. As Clinical Director she shares responsibility for the standard of care across the practice, and she is still very much a hands-on vet you will meet in the consulting room and in theatre.

Surgery is her principal clinical interest. She is committed to continuing education and makes a point of bringing new techniques and current thinking back to the team, so that what Brackenhurst offers keeps moving forward.

Owners know her for clear, honest advice, and for taking the time to make sure every decision feels like the right one for their pet and their family.

Our vets
Dr Janine Jugdawooh
Veterinarian

Dr Janine Jugdawooh

Originally from Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Jugdawooh brings a gentle, unhurried manner to every consultation. Nervous dogs and anxious cats settle quickly in her hands, and owners value how carefully she explains what she has found and what their options are.

She is a firm believer in lifelong learning, and keeps her medicine current through ongoing professional development. That mix of careful handling and up-to-date knowledge makes her as much at home with a puppy's first visit as with a more involved medical case.

Dr Luschen Govender
Veterinarian

Dr Luschen Govender

Dr Govender qualified from the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort, and brings that training straight into the consulting room and the theatre.

One of the younger vets on our team, he is already a highly capable clinician who applies current, evidence-based veterinary science with sound judgement. He is thorough in his examinations and clear in his explanations.

Above all he is naturally caring and compassionate. Patients and owners warm to him quickly, and he has become a valued part of the Brackenhurst team.

Dr Zanelle Jansen
Veterinarian

Dr Zanelle Jansen

Dr Jansen is a calm, thorough clinician who believes good medicine starts with listening. She takes the time to hear the whole story, because the small details an owner notices at home are often what lead to the right diagnosis.

She explains diagnoses and treatment options clearly and without jargon, so that owners can make confident, informed decisions about their pet's care. Her steady, reassuring manner makes her a favourite with pets, and with owners who find vet visits stressful.

Dr Muhammad Bhyat
Veterinarian

Dr Muhammad Bhyat

Dr Bhyat's special interest is internal medicine, and he is at his best with a case that has no obvious answer: the pet with vague signs, puzzling blood results or several problems at once. He works through these methodically, using our in-house laboratory, digital X-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy, and calls on CT and MRI when a case needs it, until he reaches a clear diagnosis and a plan.

Sharp, curious and never put off by a challenge, he is also the team's go-to for clinical technology, helping keep our diagnostic equipment and digital systems working the way they should.

Dr Maggie Lee
Locum veterinarian

Dr Maggie Lee

Dr Lee works with us as a locum veterinarian, providing consulting and clinical cover across the team.

She has fitted easily into the way we work, bringing the same careful, considerate approach to every patient. Owners who see her can expect the same standard of care, and the same attention to their pet's history, as with any of our permanent vets.
